Essentially, As Good As it Gets is a critical look at the power of one's own mind. While the dangers of the outside world are very real, this film demonstrates that hidden potential foe; one's very own consciousness. Sometimes we can be our own obstacle in life without ever realizing it.

The philosophical message in As Good As It Gets stems from Melvin's line "What if this is as good as it gets?" It never has to be as good as it gets; there will always be room for improvement, there will always be that temporal space for self-reflection and self-reinvention. Through others, Melvin realized his problems and once aware, the opportunity to change them was born. The opportunity for change will always be there...nothing is ever as good as it can get.
